How to meet new people in Pune when you’re coming alone

New to Pune? Choose a local game, workshop or group meetup, check the host and make your first solo visit easier to plan.

Moving to Pune gives you a new address before it gives you a group of friends. If most of the people you know are colleagues or flatmates, an activity outside that routine gives you a reason to meet someone else.

Start with something you would enjoy even if the conversation takes a while. You can browse current Pune events and check the host, venue and people joining before you decide.

Choose an activity with something to do together

For a first visit, a game or workshop gives the meeting some structure. In a badminton session, you can ask about the next rotation. At a pottery workshop, you can talk about the piece you’re making. A board-game meetup gives everyone a shared set of rules to learn.

Read whether the session welcomes beginners and people coming alone. Some sports listings need an experienced player to fill a team; others are open sessions. Ask the host if the listing leaves that unclear.

Start near home or work

Look at the exact venue before booking. If you spend your weekdays in Baner or Aundh, a nearby evening activity may be easier to repeat than a plan across the city. The same applies around Kharadi, Viman Nagar, Kothrud or Hinjewadi. These are areas to search, not a promise of an event in every neighbourhood.

For your first visit, work out how you’ll get home as well as how you’ll arrive. A manageable journey makes it easier to stay for the activity without watching the clock.

Ask one useful question before you go

“I’m coming on my own. Where should I meet the group?” tells the host what you need. For sports, ask whether to bring equipment. For a café meetup, check whether the ticket includes anything to eat or drink.

Arrive at the stated meeting point and introduce yourself to the organiser. You don’t need a rehearsed opening line. Asking how often the group meets is enough to start a conversation.

Keep the first meeting in a public place

Check the host information, meeting point, timing and cancellation terms. Tell someone you trust where you’re going. Keep personal details private until you’re comfortable, and leave if a situation feels wrong. A listing or profile cannot guarantee someone’s behaviour.

Our safety standards explain how to report a concern. For immediate danger in India, call 112.

Make the second plan easier

If you enjoyed the session, ask when the next one is. Returning to a group gives you familiar faces without having to start from scratch every weekend.
